The Comanche Trail golf course in Big Spring, Texas, is, in effect, a single hole. The hole is 7,100 yards, and it’s part of the Comanche Trail State Park, a state park that spans from Texas to Oklahoma.
The hole is simple, really. It is, of course, par 71. There is a yellow tee box and a tee box for ladies. There’s a green, and there is a water hazard.
The hole is, however, not so easy. It’s long. It’s narrow. And it’s hilly. That’s partly because of the landscape. The hill is 90 feet tall and 200 feet wide. But it’s also because the plot is relatively small.
The hole is, in effect, a single hole because it is part of a long golf course, and that golf course is in turn part of a much larger golfing area, a golfing area bigger than the state of Rhode Island. The Comanche Trail is considered one of the longest courses in the world, and it was built on a tract of 3,000 acres.

The Comanche Trail Golf Course in Big Spring TX was opened in 1985. The 18-hole golf course is 6,226 yards long.
The first thing about Comanche Trail Golf Course is how easy it is to find. Located on the northeast edge of Big Spring on I-20, it’s easy to miss, but once you have found it, you will never forget it. The clubhouse, designed by award-winning architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., is a stunning example of contemporary design. A vast glass atrium with a massive solid oak staircase connects the clubhouse to the pro shop, restaurant, and locker rooms.
A putting green overlooks the clubhouse and fairway below. On the opposite side of the green are two bunkers, one with low sand, the other with high sand. The 18th hole is next to a river and a green that rises and falls with the level of the water.
We were driving by one evening and saw a sign advertising the Comanche Trail Golf Course. The sign promised a “challenge” course, and the Big Spring golf course was the only one I knew. So we went.
It turned out to be a good thing we did. It was the only course in Texas where you drove your car to the tee, and since the course was hilly, you had to keep watching it to make sure it didn’t roll away.
